Lorena Popović is a researcher at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, affiliated with the Department of Historical and Cultural Anthropology within the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. She is part of the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 923 'Bedrohte Ordnungen' (Threatened Orders), specifically the G03 sub-project examining 'A Genealogy of Hybridity' in Istria's multicultural context from 1970 to 2013.
Her research focuses on the construction of Istrian regional identity through cultural hybridity, analyzing demographic shifts, political transitions, and cultural narratives in the region. Key themes include multilingualism, multicultural coexistence ('convivenza'), and the intersection of historical empires (Venetian/Habsburg legacies) with modern nationalism. She critically examines how Istrian identity serves as a counterpoint to post-Yugoslav nationalisms.
Popović holds a Master's degree from the University of Tübingen and University College Cork, with a thesis on Istria's cultural space in literature and film (1977–2002). Since 2015, she has contributed to SFB 923 projects, investigating inclusion processes, contested boundaries, and the evolving Istrian identity narrative among cultural producers, politicians, and scholars.
