Reiner Rugulies is Professor of Psychosocial Work Environment and Health at the National Research Centre for the Working Environment in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Adjunct Professor of Psychosocial Medicine in the Section of Epidemiology, Department of Public Health at the University of Copenhagen. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health. His research spans over two decades with significant contributions to understanding how workplace conditions affect health outcomes.
His educational background includes a PhD and Master of Science in Psychology from the University of Bielefeld, Germany, and a Master of Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, USA. His research focuses on the psychological and social determinants of health, particularly regarding mental disorders, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and work disability. He is also interested in designing and evaluating occupational health interventions and examining how working conditions contribute to health inequalities.
His work spans epidemiological investigations of work environment factors, with particular expertise in psychosocial work conditions, mental health outcomes, and health inequalities. His recent publications address critical issues including telework, migrant worker health, precarious employment, and the intersection of climate change with occupational health.
Rugulies has received recognition for his editorial leadership as Editor-in-Chief of the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health, a premier publication in occupational health research.
His current research projects include 'Working to the older age: assessing psychosocial resources in the working environment as decelerators of cardiometabolic disease development' (2025-2028), 'Vidensgrundlag om høje følelsesmæssige krav' (2022-2025), and 'Sund og sikker hele arbejdslivet' (2020-2025), all addressing critical aspects of workplace health and safety.
He leads research at the National Research Centre for the Working Environment, where his team investigates the complex relationships between social structures, psychological processes, and physiological changes that influence health and illness in working populations.
