Reed Carroll

Reed Carroll is a Professor of Biology at New Jersey City University where he has been on the faculty since 2013. He serves as a faculty member in the Biology department and became director of the NJCU Honors Program at the end of 2024. His academic career includes significant research contributions in neuroscience, particularly focusing on synaptic mechanisms and neurological disorders.

Dr. Carroll received his B.A. in Cell Biology from Cornell University and earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Harvard University. He completed postdoctoral training in neuroscience at UC-San Francisco and Stanford University. Prior to joining NJCU, he served on the faculty for nearly 13 years in the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience at Albert Einstein College for Medicine.

His research interests center on the mechanisms regulating inhibitory synapses in the brain with the aim of providing insight into disorders associated with altered excitation in the brain including autism and epilepsy. His work extensively examines AMPA receptor biology, synaptic plasticity mechanisms, and retinal ganglion cell function. Over his career, he has published numerous research papers in high-impact neuroscience journals focusing on molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission and plasticity.

Dr. Carroll has been actively involved in developing programs that enhance student success at NJCU, directing several grant-funded activities designed to boost career readiness through career skills workshops, career-preparation courses, and student mentoring programs. He has also helped organize summer research internships and coordinated research presentations at the NJCU STEM Research Symposium for 10 years.
