Rebecca Wynter is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, focusing on the history of medicine, psychiatry, and Quaker studies. She leads the AHRC-funded 'Forged by Fire' project exploring burns injuries and identity in Britain (1800–2000). Her roles include Reviews Editor for Quaker Studies, Roy Porter Prize Chair, and membership in the Society for the Social History of Medicine’s Executive Committee.
Educated at the University of Birmingham (PhD 2008, MPhil 2006, BA 2004), her research spans First World War medicine, mental health, neurodiversity, and medical ethics. She co-curated exhibitions like 'Faith & Action: Quakers & the First World War' and has collaborated with BBC documentaries and museums.
Her research emphasizes two core themes: medicine, reform, and conscience; and communication of mental health and science. Awards include Outstanding Journal Reviewer (2016, 2019) and grants from the Society for the Social History of Medicine and the Guarantors of Brain.
Wynter advises doctoral students on topics like burns injuries, whistleblowing, and prison health systems. She is affiliated with multiple research networks, including the University of Kent’s Gateways to the First World War Research Network.
