Rebecca Winthrop is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution, and a part-time Lecturer at Georgetown University. Her work focuses on global education reform, family-school engagement, and skills development for marginalized youth.
Research Interests: Winthrop explores how education systems can be redesigned to address inequality, leverage technology, and foster civic participation. Her expertise spans post-conflict education, community schools, and AI's role in learning.
Publications: Recent works include analyses of teen disengagement, systemic education transformation, and post-pandemic recovery strategies. Themes center on equity, innovation, and measuring meaningful educational outcomes.
Affiliations: She leads the Brookings Global Task Force on AI in Education and co-leads the Family Engagement in Education Network. Past roles include advising the UN's Education First Initiative and co-chairing UNESCO's Learning Metrics Task Force.
Prior Experience: Before Brookings, she headed education programs for the International Rescue Committee in 20+ conflict-affected countries.
