Rebecca D. Patterson is a Professor of the Practice of International Affairs and Director of the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. She also serves as Associate Director of the Security Studies Program. Her research focuses on civil-military relations, nation-building, peacekeeping, and post-conflict economics. Patterson retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years, with overseas assignments in Thailand, Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Education: Ph.D. in National Security Policy from George Washington University, M.S. in Engineering Management from Missouri University of Science and Technology, B.S. in Economics from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Previous roles include Deputy Director at the Department of State’s Office of Peace Operations, Strategic Advisor to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, and academic positions at the National Defense University and West Point. She is a CFR International Affairs Fellow and a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Her notable work includes the book The Challenge of Nation-Building: Implementing Effective Innovation in the U.S. Army from World War II to the Iraq War.
