Her research explores intersections of gender, labor, and regional identity through historical lenses, particularly examining Southern and Texas women's experiences across diverse contexts including food production, domestic work, and wartime loyalties. She contributes to scholarly discourse through monographs and edited volumes that analyze underrepresented narratives in U.S. history.
Recent publications demonstrate thematic continuity in analyzing gendered material culture (baking, foodways), marginalized Southern communities, and the complexities of gender solidarity across racial and class divides. Her work often contextualizes personal narratives within broader socio-political frameworks.
Professor Sharpless teaches courses spanning U.S. history surveys, specialized topics in women's history, Texas history, and intersections of food, gender, and regional identity. She has co-edited significant academic volumes including Texas Women: Their Histories, Their Lives (2015) and Work, Family, and Faith: Rural Southern Women in the Twentieth Century (2006).
