Rebecca Russell Buchanan is a Professor in the Health & Human Performance Department at Emory & Henry College. She joined the institution in 2003, previously serving as Assistant Dean of Students for five years. Her professional affiliations include membership in the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth SWVA Regional Advisory Board.
Education:

- B.A. in Sociology, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (on full athletic scholarship)
Research Focus: Her work emphasizes trauma-informed educational approaches, youth sports development, wellness initiatives, and the cognitive benefits of physical movement. She has conducted fieldwork in countries including Russia, Argentina, Canada, Japan, and Greece.
Professional Background: Prior to academia, Buchanan was a elite athlete: 8-time All-American in track & field, ACC Champion, 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials finalist, and 1997 U.S. World Championship Team member. She remains an ACC 50th Anniversary Women's Outdoor Track & Field team honoree (2002).
Engagement: Active in community health initiatives through her advisory board roles and interdisciplinary academic programming at Emory & Henry.
