Rebecca Rodriguez Carey serves as an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminology within the Department of Sociology and Criminology at Emporia State University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences, a position she has held since 2018.
Her academic credentials include:
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Sociology from the University of Missouri, with a minor in College Teaching
- Master of Arts (M.A.) in Sociology from the University of Missouri
- Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice from Wichita State University
Dr. Carey's research centers on the intersection of gender, crime, and incarceration, with specific focus on women's experiences in prison, particularly regarding pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. She utilizes qualitative methodologies, including in-depth interviews, to explore how incarceration transforms these life events. Her teaching portfolio encompasses introductory sociology, criminology, women and crime, sociology of gender, and victimology, where she integrates high-impact learning practices.
She has been recognized with:
- Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program Fellowship
- ESU Assessment Champion Award (2022) for data-driven teaching excellence
Active in campus life, Dr. Carey advises the Criminal Justice Student Organization and co-founded the EAT Initiative, an interdisciplinary project addressing food insecurity at ESU and in Emporia. Her scholarly contributions appear in Women & Criminal Justice and the edited volume Caged Women: Incarceration, Representation, & Media.
