Michelle Hughes Miller is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of South Florida (College of Arts and Sciences). As a feminist criminologist with a PhD in Sociology from the University of Nebraska (1997), she specializes in Feminist Pedagogy, Feminist Research Methods, Politics of Motherhood, Women and Social Justice, and Gender, Crime & Justice.
Research Interests: Dr. Hughes Miller's work spans three key areas: 1) feminist criminology focusing on systemic responses to violence against women, 2) motherhood studies examining legal and policy constructions of motherhood, and 3) STEM diversity research addressing equity challenges for sexual and gender minority undergraduates. Her scholarship has been recognized through the USF Faculty Outstanding Research Achievement Award (2017).

Research Activity: Holds over $500,000 in interdisciplinary STEM-related grants, including the 2017 project 'Exploring the Effects of Academic Climate and Social Networks on the Persistence of Sexual and Gender Minority STEM Undergraduates.' Current collaborative work with Dr. Olga Marques on 'Incarcerated (M)others' expands motherhood studies into carceral contexts.
