Dr Rebecca Murray is a Lecturer in Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield, specializing in migration, education access, and refugee advocacy. She leads the MA Social Work programme’s admissions and chairs the University of Sanctuary Advisory Group. Her research focuses on bordering practices in higher education, particularly supporting forced migrant students, and she co-founded the Article 26 project promoting scholarships for marginalized students.
Education: Completed a PhD titled ‘Navigating the Higher Education Border: Routes to Belonging for Forced Migrant Students in the UK & Sweden’, comparing university policies in displacement contexts. Holds a Welfare Rights Officer qualification and extensive third-sector experience with Save the Children.
Research Interests: Borders in education, sanctuary initiatives, anti-trafficking advocacy, and refugee resettlement pathways. Current projects include a British Academy-funded study quantifying higher education borders and a collaboration with Amnesty International on refugee resettlement.
Grants: Secured £235,000 for the Article 26 project, British Academy grants, and ERASMUS+ funding. Awards include honorary doctorates from Keele University (2019) and a fellowship from Winchester University (2016).
Teaching: Convenes modules on social work professional development, migration, race, and sociology. Guest lectures on safeguarding and evidence-based practice.
