Rebecca Hellmann is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University, and an Assistant Attending Physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Her roles include academic and clinical leadership in emergency medicine with a focus on geriatrics and elder mistreatment. She holds a D.O. from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine and a B.S. from Washington University.
Her research focuses on elder mistreatment, healthcare disparities, and ageism, particularly in emergency and long-term care settings. She has pioneered programs addressing elder abuse documentation, caregiver neglect, and resident-to-resident aggression in assisted living facilities. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and policy development to improve outcomes for aging populations.
Dr. Hellmann has secured grants from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) for projects exploring racial and ethnic disparities in resident aggression and dementia care. Her publications in journals like the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and Prehospital Emergency Care highlight her contributions to clinical protocols and public health strategies.
She leads initiatives such as the Emergency Department/Hospital-Based Elder Mistreatment Response Program and collaborates with community organizations to address mistreatment through culturally adapted interventions. Her research also examines the impact of ageism on healthcare decisions and pandemic-related challenges in elder care.
