Rebecca Cummins is a Professor and Floyd and Delores Jones Endowed Professor in the Arts at the University of Washington, Seattle, within the School of Art + Art History + Design. She specializes in light, natural phenomena, and interdisciplinary collaborations between art and science. Her work includes installations exploring optics, sundials, and scientific imaging, often referencing historical scientific methods. Cummins holds a PhD from the University of Technology Sydney (2003), an MA from the University of New Mexico (1982), and a BFA from the University of Northern Iowa (1979).
Her research integrates public art, cross-disciplinary partnerships with scientists, and community engagement. Notable public commissions include works for the Seattle Public Library, Washington State Arts Commission, and the Exploratorium in San Francisco. She has exhibited globally, including at the Shanghai Biennial, the Biennial of Seville, and KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.
Recent projects involve microscopy collaborations in the UW Wordeman Lab (Physiology & Biophysics) and residencies at Bundanon Trust (Australia) and SymbioticA (University of Western Australia). Awards include grants from the Simpson Center for the Humanities and Artist Trust. Cummins has taught since 2001 at the University of Washington, following 16 years at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney.
