Dr. Rebecca Charles is a Research Fellow at the William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI), Queen Mary University of London, affiliated with the Clinical Pharmacology and Precision Medicine department. She holds a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Birmingham (2002) and a PhD from King’s College London’s School of Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences. Her research focuses on redox sensing mechanisms in soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) and its role in cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. Supported by a British Heart Foundation Intermediate Fellowship (2017), her work explores sEH’s regulation via oxidative post-translational modifications and its implications for heart failure, hypertension, and atherosclerosis.
- Key Collaborators: Prof. Philip Eaton (WHRI), Dr. Roberto Buccafusca (Physics & Chemical Sciences)
Her studies demonstrate sEH’s dual role as both a cardiovascular risk factor and therapeutic target, with inhibitors showing promise in blocking cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. Notable translational work includes linking dietary components like olive oil to cardiovascular benefits through sEH modulation, featured in BBC News and The Telegraph (2014).
