Professor Raymond Norton holds a personal chair in Medicinal Chemistry at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University, Australia. He leads a research group of over 15 researchers and has secured funding from NHMRC, ARC, Wellcome Trust, and NIH. His research focuses on venom-derived peptides and proteins, structural biology, and drug discovery targeting autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, and infectious diseases. He completed his PhD in Chemistry at Australian National University and postdoctoral studies in the US before joining the Roche Research Institute of Marine Pharmacology as a QEII Fellow.
Education: PhD (Chemistry, Australian National University), BSc (Honours Biochemistry, University of Melbourne).
Research Interests: Development of peptide therapeutics from venoms, structure-based drug design, NMR spectroscopy, and fragment-based discovery. His lab employs biophysical methods like X-ray crystallography and SPR to study ion channels and anti-infective agents. Key projects include Phase 1 clinical trials for autoimmune therapies and preclinical evaluation of ultra-rapid insulins.
Recent Work: Studies on sea anemone toxins, Kv1.3 channel inhibitors, and antimalarial agents. Over 380 publications and 10+ patents, with an h-index of 67. Elected Fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance. Active in professional roles, including Chair of the International Conference on Magnetic Resonance in Biological Systems (ICMRBS).
Awards: Leach Lecture and Medal (2018). Leading 28 projects since 2009, including ARC-funded studies on membrane protein expression and antimalarial agents.
