Dr. Raylene Reimer De Bruyn is a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and holds a joint appointment in the Cumming School of Medicine’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Calgary. She is also a full scientist at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and an Associate Member of the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health. Her research focuses on leveraging nutrition and microbiome science to combat chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and fatty liver disease. She pioneered prebiotic therapies to modulate gut microbiota and improve metabolic health outcomes.
Dr. Reimer obtained her PhD in Nutrition and Metabolism from the University of Alberta (1997), followed by postdoctoral training at the Nestlé Research Centre in Switzerland. She is a Registered Dietitian with over 20 years of academic and clinical experience. Her work spans basic science to human clinical trials, including studies on maternal diet, prebiotics in type 1 diabetes management, and osteoarthritis pain reduction through dietary interventions.
Her research interests include the gut-brain axis, early-life dietary programming, and translational nutrition strategies. Awards include the Earle Willard McHenry Award (2021) and Killam Annual Professorship (2020). She teaches courses like Advanced Nutrition (KNES 437) and supervises graduate students in metabolic health research.
