Ravi Allada is the Executive Director of the Michigan Neuroscience Institute (MNI) and holds the Theophile Raphael, M.D., Collegiate Professorship of Neurosciences at the University of Michigan. He previously served as Professor and Chair of Neurobiology at Northwestern University for 23 years.
- B.A., University of Michigan
- M.D., University of Michigan
- Residency in Clinical Pathology, Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School
His research focuses on sleep homeostasis and circadian biology, using Drosophila models to uncover molecular mechanisms conserved across species. Key areas include:
- Neuronal and molecular components of sleep regulation
- Circadian clock mechanisms
- Sleep-wake state interactions
- Links between sleep and neurodegenerative diseases
- Jet lag impacts on human performance
Recent publications highlight his work on sleep homeostat programming (eLife, 2022), Tau protein effects on circadian neurons (Human Molecular Genetics, 2022), and traumatic brain injury consequences (PLoS Biology, 2022). Methodological innovations in circadian state detection (PNAS, 2018) and translational studies on Huntington's disease (Cell Reports, 2019) demonstrate his interdisciplinary approach spanning molecular genetics to behavioral physiology.
Scientific recognitions include:
- Distinguished Service Award, Society for Research on Biological Rhythms
- Edward C. Stuntz Distinguished Professorship
- Burroughs Wellcome Career Award recipient
- Leadership roles in Sleep Disorders Research advisory boards
As director of the Allada Lab, he leads teams investigating sleep's role in memory processing, brain health, and disease prevention through both invertebrate and mammalian models.
