Rauna Kuokkanen is a Research Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lapland. Her research focuses on Indigenous self-determination, sovereignty, gender studies, and Arctic governance. She has led projects such as SAPMIDEM (examining Sámi democratic engagement in energy transitions) and Siidakoulu (reimagining Sámi socio-economic systems).
Key awards include the 2021 Global Development Studies Book Award and multiple international prizes for contributions to Indigenous studies. Her work bridges international relations, political science, and Indigenous epistemologies, addressing issues like pandemic governance, gendered violence among Indigenous communities, and energy diplomacy in Arctic regions.
Grants include funding from Nordforsk, Kone Foundation, and the Research Council of Finland. She has supervised one documented project and contributed to strategic profiling initiatives (PROFI) advancing interdisciplinary research agendas.
