Professor Rashan Haniffa is the Chair of Critical Care Medicine and Health Systems Research at the Centre for Inflammation Research, University of Edinburgh. He holds honorary roles at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University Hospital (Sri Lanka), University College London, and leads the Wellcome UKRI/MRC Collaboration for Research, Implementation and Training in Asia and Africa (CCAA). His research focuses on leveraging digital healthcare registries to improve critical care outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), emphasizing real-time data-driven decision-making and equitable clinical trial participation.
Education:
- MBBS from the University of Colombo (2003)

- MSc in Clinical Trials from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
Research interests span critical care epidemiology, global health systems strengthening, and the implementation of clinical registries. Recent work has prioritized oxygenation protocols, interventions for post-ICU rehabilitation, and antibiotic stewardship in LMICs. His team’s publications highlight disparities in critical care access and outcomes across global regions.
Key awards include the Intensive Care Society Research Gold Medal (2016) and recognition as a Global Rising Star (2015). He co-founded NICS-MORU, a data coordination hub for multinational critical care research, and advises national registries in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Collaborations extend to institutions like the University of Oxford and the Instituto D'Or de Pesquisa e Ensino (Brazil).
Advising and Grants: Supervises PhD students across international institutions, leads the CCAA consortium, and directs NICS-MORU operations. Current grants focus on registry implementation and pandemic response initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Coordinates the Critical Care Asia and Africa Network and oversees the NICS-MORU data platform, fostering multidisciplinary research collaborations globally.
