Dr. Mehul Dhorda serves as the DeTACT-Africa Coordinator and Head of Specimen Management Laboratory at the Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU), which is part of the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford. He also leads the Asia Regional Centre of the WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN) and the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory.
Dr. Dhorda's research focuses on combating malaria through innovative approaches to monitoring drug resistance and developing effective treatment strategies. His work spans:
- Surveillance of antimalarial drug resistance in real-time
- Development and evaluation of Triple Antimalarial Combination Therapies (TACTs)
- Implementation of field-appropriate diagnostic tools in resource-limited settings
- Geospatial mapping of resistance patterns to inform treatment policies
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on translational research that bridges laboratory findings with clinical applications. Dhorda's work emphasizes practical solutions for resource-limited settings, particularly in Southeast Asia and Africa where malaria burden is highest. He has pioneered approaches to make resistance surveillance data freely available through open-access platforms, enabling timely treatment adjustments based on local resistance patterns.
Dr. Dhorda leads multi-center research initiatives including the DeTACT project, which compares standard antimalarial drug combinations against novel Triple Antimalarial Combination Therapies. His work with the WWARN has established robust systems for monitoring resistance patterns globally, helping ensure patients receive the most effective treatments available.
As Head of the Specimen Management Laboratory, he coordinates field laboratory activities and quality assurance for multiple MORU-led projects. His leadership extends to coordinating the Asia Regional Centre of the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory, where he oversees the External Quality Assessment Programme.
