Michael Alifrangis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He serves as a key member of the Centre for Medical Parasitology (CMP) and leads the DRUGS team, focusing on malaria research and drug resistance monitoring. With over 20 years of experience in molecular research of infectious diseases, his work has significant implications for malaria treatment strategies in endemic regions worldwide.
Dr. Alifrangis holds a PhD from the University of Copenhagen (2002) with a dissertation titled "The use of molecular markers to monitor malaria drug resistance" and an M.Sc. Biol. from the same institution (1997) on "Detection of Plasmodium mixed infections." His academic journey began with foundational studies at Roskilde University Center in 1991.
His primary research focuses on improving malaria treatment through antimalarial drugs and understanding factors affecting treatment outcomes. A significant portion of his work involves using molecular markers to monitor and potentially hinder the emergence and spread of drug resistance in malaria-endemic regions. Current research examines the efficiency of antimalarial drugs across patient groups, drug availability and quality in endemic areas, and molecular mapping of drug resistance through parasite genotyping. His work also includes epidemiological studies on decreasing malaria trends in selected African countries.
Dr. Alifrangis has served on WHO Global Malaria Programme Expert Review Committees for monitoring SP resistance in the context of Intermittent Preventive Treatment in infants (2009) and for Intermitted Preventive Treatment of malaria in pregnancy (2013). Since 2009, he has been a Technical Advisor for the Worldwide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN) as the Molecular Module Manager.
- Serving on WHO Global Malaria Programme Expert Review Committees (2009, 2013)
- Technical Advisor for WWARN Molecular Module (2009-Present)
- Over 118 publications in international peer-reviewed journals
- Citation indices: 3281 total citations, h-index: 33, i10-index: 77
As an educator and mentor, Dr. Alifrangis has supervised 15 PhD students (5 ongoing, including 3 BsU students), numerous Master's students, and technicians. He has contributed to the Master of International Health program and facilitated methodological courses across Africa. His managerial expertise includes leading projects like Building Stronger Universities III at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College and serving as work package leader for EU/EDCTP-funded projects on malaria treatment during pregnancy.
His research capacity building efforts have significantly impacted institutions in Tanzania, Ghana, Mozambique, and Sri Lanka through training and methodology transfer. He has organized and lectured at numerous workshops across Africa on molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics, and malaria drug resistance monitoring.
