Raquel Tavares is a Principal Researcher at CIBIO-InBIO, Universidade do Porto, leading the PlantEvol research group. Her work focuses on plant genomics, molecular evolution, and the interplay between genotype and phenotype. She holds a PhD and has extensive experience in plant ecophysiology and genomic studies, with a particular interest in gene duplication and stress resistance mechanisms in grapevine. Tavares has held academic positions at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (LBBE) since 2005, contributing to teaching in biomathematics, bioinformatics, and plant genomics. Her research integrates genomic approaches to understand plant adaptation and evolutionary processes, including studies on angiosperm flower evolution and domestication genetics.
Her research projects include investigating heat/drought resistance in grapevine and the evolutionary origins of angiosperm floral structures. Tavares has collaborated internationally, including visiting roles at Instituto Superior de Agronomia (Lisbon) and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (Oeiras). Her contributions span over 20 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing genomic and evolutionary analyses in plants. Key themes in her work include gene function in sex determination, epigenetic regulation, and the evolutionary implications of genomic imprinting.
While no formal awards are listed, her prolific publication record and leadership in plant genomics research highlight her significant contributions to the field. Tavares’ work bridges fundamental biology with applied challenges in plant adaptation, positioning her at the forefront of modern plant science.
