Mariana Sottomayor is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (FCUP), and a researcher at CIBIO-InBIO since 2015. Her work bridges Plant Biology, Genomics, and Bioinformatics to address agricultural challenges under climate change.
- Research Interests: Specialized plant metabolism (e.g., anticancer alkaloids in Catharanthus roseus), transcriptomic profiling of idioblasts, and bioinformatic analysis of plant biodiversity.
- Projects: AGRIGEN, TomaZinco, CellDivCork, and HDT-Coffee, focusing on agronomic traits in grapevine, tomato, cork oak, and coffee rust resistance.
- Publications: 8 SCI articles on alkaloid transport, anthocyanin degradation, peroxidase characterization, and vacuolar metabolism.
Her recent work explores the C. roseus leaf idioblastome and grapevine genomics to identify genetic determinants of typicity and stress resilience. She is actively seeking funding to enhance alkaloid production in medicinal plants.
