Rana Hogarth is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a PhD in History from Yale University and an MHS in Health Policy from Johns Hopkins University. Her work examines the intersection of race, medicine, and science in the Atlantic World during the era of slavery and its aftermath.
Her research explores how medical and scientific knowledge constructed racial differences across the Americas. Key areas include colonial medicine, racial science, and the legacies of slavery in healthcare systems. Her work bridges African American history, history of medicine, and Atlantic World studies.
Professor Hogarth teaches courses on race and science, colonialism, and slavery. She maintains active research collaborations examining the historical roots of racial disparities in medicine.
