Stephanie Smallwood is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington, affiliated with the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and holding a joint appointment in the Department of Comparative History of Ideas. Her research focuses on the Atlantic World, Slavery, Colonialism, and the African Diaspora.
- Education: PhD in History from Duke University (1999)
Her groundbreaking work Saltwater Slavery (2007) examines the Middle Passage through economic, political, and cultural lenses. Current projects include Rethinking the Atlantic "World": Historical Geographies of Power and Possibility and a critical analysis of the 'culture' concept in African diaspora studies.
Professor Smallwood's research intersects with broader themes of:
- Comparative colonialisms
- Racial slavery and its legacies
- Methodological innovations in Atlantic history
- Epistemological critiques of modernity
She teaches courses such as Africa in the Era of the Atlantic Slave Trade and Honors Historical Method, and advises graduate students in African history (pre-colonial period), early modern Atlantic history, and comparative colonialisms.
