Ramón E. Soto-Crespo is Professor of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with additional appointments in Spanish and Portuguese, Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, Center for the Study of Global Gender Equity, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Program in Comparative and World Literature. Previously, he served as Director of the Latino Studies Program at The State University of New York at Buffalo from 2002 to 2012.
Soto-Crespo's research focuses on American Literature, Gender/Sexuality Studies, Latina/o Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, and Caribbean Literature. His work explores themes of decapitalization, trash studies, Puerto Rican cultural identity, and sexual practices in neoliberal contexts. He has developed innovative frameworks for understanding marginalized identities and literary representations of "white trash" communities in the Caribbean and beyond, challenging traditional literary canons and examining lesser-studied narrative forms.
His scholarly publications reveal a consistent exploration of Caribbean and Latin/o American literary traditions, with particular attention to marginalized voices and unconventional narrative forms. Soto-Crespo's work often bridges literary analysis with critical theory, psychoanalysis, and postcolonial studies, examining how literature represents historical trauma, cultural devaluation, and identity formation in post-colonial contexts. His research demonstrates how "trash" aesthetics and decapitalized identities challenge conventional literary hierarchies.
Soto-Crespo has received several notable awards including the Lorraine Lawton Prize for Excellence in Comparative Literature, an Award for Excellence in History, and an Honorable Mention at the 2009 Modern Language Association Prize in United States Latino and Chicano Literary and Cultural Studies.
His research has been supported by prestigious fellowships and grants from the Ford Foundation, the University of Wisconsin Institute on Race and Ethnicity, the Schomburg Foundation, Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Research Fellowship, the Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy, the UB Humanities Institute, and the UIUC Humanities Research Institute. Soto-Crespo currently serves as co-editor of the Journal of Modern Literature.
