Ramón E Soto-Crespo is Professor of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with additional appointments as Professor in Spanish and Portuguese, Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, Center for the Study of Global Gender Equity, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Program in Comparative and World Literature. He previously served as Director of the Latino Studies Program at The State University of New York at Buffalo from 2002 to 2012.
His scholarship centers on:
- Latina/o Studies and Caribbean literary traditions
- Gender/Sexuality Studies with emphasis on queer theory and heteroflexibility
- Decapitalization processes in racialized class formations
- Trash literature and marginalized narrative forms
- Puerto Rican cultural production and diaspora studies
Soto-Crespo's work explores how literature represents historical trauma, colonial legacies, and identity formation in post-plantation societies, particularly through what he terms 'decapitalization' - processes of cultural and economic devaluation. His research challenges traditional literary canons by examining 'trash' narratives that have been systematically overlooked in Global South literature.
His publications demonstrate an evolution from early work on Puerto Rican literature to more recent explorations of sexual practices under neoliberalism and the role of marginalized narratives in cultural production. His scholarship spans psychoanalytic approaches to Marxist theory, revealing deep interdisciplinary engagement across literary criticism, cultural studies, and social theory.
Notable honors include:
- Lorraine Lawton Prize for Excellence in Comparative Literature
- Award for Excellence in History
- Honorable mention at the 2009 Modern Language Association Prize in United States Latino and Chicano Literary and Cultural Studies
Soto-Crespo's research has been supported by prestigious fellowships from the Ford Foundation, University of Wisconsin Institute on Race and Ethnicity, Schomburg Foundation, Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Research Fellowship, Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy, UB Humanities Institute, and UIUC Humanities Research Institute. As co-editor of the Journal of Modern Literature, he shapes contemporary literary scholarship while maintaining an active publication record that demonstrates sustained intellectual productivity. His work connects multiple research communities through interdisciplinary approaches that bridge literary studies with gender studies, postcolonial theory, and Caribbean studies, offering critical frameworks for understanding how marginalized communities navigate systems of power and representation.
