Dr. Ramya Balachandran is an Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a Ramalingaswami Fellow at Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Her work focuses on image-guided otologic surgery and robot-assisted surgical navigation, particularly for cochlear implantation and temporal bone procedures.
- Education: PhD (2008), MS (2003), and BE (2001) in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University and University of Madras.
Her research bridges biomedical engineering and clinical otology, emphasizing precision surgical tools, customized drill guides, and medical imaging validation. Key trends in her publications include robotic mastoidectomy, deep-brain stimulation accuracy, and portable CT scanner applications in surgery.
She has received the Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship and contributed to clinical validation studies for percutaneous cochlear implantation. Her laboratory, the Computer-Assisted Otologic Surgery (CAOS) Lab and Medical Engineering and Discovery Lab (MED Lab), drives innovation in minimally-invasive surgical systems.
