Rami Kantor is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brown University. He directs the Drug Resistance Laboratory at the Providence-Boston Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and co-Directs the CFAR Basic Science Core. Dr. Kantor is also a past Chair of the HIV Comorbidities and Clinical Studies (HCCS) NIH study section, a member of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Guidelines Panel for HIV Treatment in Adults and Adolescents, and Deputy Editor and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of the International AIDS Society.
Dr. Kantor's educational background includes:
- MD from Sackler School of Medicine (1995)
- BS from Sackler School of Medicine (1987)
- Clinical Fellow in Infectious Diseases at Brown University (2005-2007)
- HIV Research Fellow at Stanford University (2000-2004)
- Internal Medicine Resident at Tel Aviv University, Sheba Medical Center (1995-1999)
Dr. Kantor's research focuses on HIV diversity, the evolution of resistance to antiretroviral medications, molecular epidemiology and HIV transmission through networks, and treatment monitoring of people living with HIV. His work spans from basic science investigations of drug resistance mechanisms to clinical and public health applications in both resource-rich and resource-limited settings. He has established collaborations with clinicians, statisticians, engineers, computational and evolutionary biologists, and behavioral scientists both within Brown University and internationally.
Dr. Kantor's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on HIV drug resistance, transmission dynamics, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HIV care. His work spans molecular epidemiology, clinical management of HIV, and social determinants of health affecting HIV care engagement, particularly among vulnerable populations like adolescents and those in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Kantor has received several prestigious awards:
- Bruce M. Selya Award for Research Excellence (2014)
- Beckwith Family Award for Outstanding Teaching (2018)
Throughout his career, Dr. Kantor has been deeply committed to mentoring, having guided numerous undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty. His research has been consistently NIH-funded since his recruitment to Brown University in 2005. He has established national and international collaborations, working with networks such as the HIV Non-Subtype B Workgroup, the World Health Organization HIV Drug Resistance Network, the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), TREAT Asia, and the International Epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA).
Dr. Kantor directs the Drug Resistance Laboratory at the Providence-Boston Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and co-Directs the CFAR Basic Science Core. His laboratory focuses on examining HIV drug resistance, transmission and diversity in adults and children in Rhode Island and in resource-limited settings, assessing the added value of integrating molecular epidemiology into public health to prevent HIV transmission, and developing advanced methods to detect and interpret HIV drug resistance.
