Ralph S. Baric, PhD, is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Epidemiology at the Gillings School of Global Public Health and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the UNC School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases. For over three decades, Dr. Baric has been a world leader in coronavirus research, consistently warning about the threat of emerging coronaviruses jumping from animals to humans.
Dr. Baric's educational background includes:
- PhD in Microbiology from North Carolina State University (1982)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Microbiology from the University of Southern California (1986)
- BS in Zoology from North Carolina State University (1977)
Dr. Baric's research primarily focuses on coronaviruses as models to study RNA virus transcription, replication, persistence, and cross-species transmission. His laboratory utilizes molecular, genetic, and biochemical approaches to decipher the complex interactions between virions and cell surface molecules that function in viral entry and cross-species transmission of positive-strand RNA viruses. His groundbreaking work with mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) demonstrated that xenotropic host range variants rapidly evolve in experimental models, suggesting xenograph recipients may represent an optimum environment for virus cross-species transmission. His research has shown that viruses bridge species barriers through punctuated evolution and positive Darwinian natural selection at the molecular level.
Dr. Baric's recent publications demonstrate a continued focus on coronavirus research but have expanded to include norovirus, alphaviruses, and other RNA viruses. His work spans basic virology, drug discovery, vaccine development, and understanding host-pathogen interactions. A significant portion of his recent work focuses on developing broad-spectrum antivirals (including GS-5734/Remdesivir), understanding cross-protection mechanisms, and developing animal models for studying Long Covid. His research has direct translational applications for pandemic preparedness and response.
Dr. Baric's numerous prestigious awards include:
- Highly Cited Researchers (Top 1%), Web of Science, Clarivate Analytics (2021-2024)
- Elected into the National Academy of Sciences (2021)
- Elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2022)
- Triangle Business Journal's Health Care Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award (2021)
- Oliver Max Gardner Award (2021)
- William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professorship (2019)
Dr. Baric has secured significant research funding, including a $6 million grant from NIAID to accelerate development of a promising antiviral drug. His lab has made groundbreaking discoveries in coronavirus pathogenesis and transmission, including demonstrating that a broad-spectrum antiviral (GS-5734) inhibits multiple coronaviruses. He has collaborated extensively with Gilead Sciences and has been instrumental in advancing antiviral treatments into clinical trials. Throughout his career, Dr. Baric has mentored numerous students and researchers, contributing to the development of the next generation of virologists.
Dr. Baric leads the Baric Lab at UNC-Chapel Hill, which uses innovative approaches to study virus-host interactions. His team has developed sophisticated models for studying cross-species transmission, particularly relevant to xenotransplantation scenarios. The lab maintains strong collaborations across UNC departments and with industry partners, positioning UNC-Chapel Hill as a world leader in coronavirus research. His work has been critical to understanding and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, building on decades of foundational research on coronaviruses.
