Ralph Buchenhorst is an associate professor at the Turkish-German University in Istanbul, Turkey. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Vienna (thesis: Heidegger’s philosophy of art and Paul Celan’s theory of poetry) and a habilitation from the University of Potsdam (topic: Holocaust representation in philosophical discourse). He has served as a DAAD guest professor at multiple institutions including the University of Buenos Aires (2002-2006), Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2013), and Emory University (USA).
Research Focus: Buchenhorst specializes in Critical Theory, genocide studies, and memory discourses related to the Holocaust and Argentina’s last dictatorship. His current work explores:
- Colonial legacies in the Humboldt Forum Berlin through decolonial Latin American concepts like Buen Vivir
- European memory sites' approach to creating a common European identity
- Ethical representation of traumatic histories
Publications: He is co-editor of the forthcoming Routledge volume Surviving genocide: On what remains and the possibility of representation and author of the monograph Das Element des Nachlebens (Fink 2011). His recent articles examine:
- Post-Anthropocene memory practices
- Materiality in remembrance cultures
- Transnational Holocaust remembrance
- Decolonial critiques of modernity
Projects: Buchenhorst contributes to the LOST research network (Law, Organization, Science and Technology) and has been analyzing the Humboldt Forum Berlin's engagement with decolonial concepts since 2017. His work focuses on institutional responses to colonial pasts and intercultural representation strategies.
