Rajen Akalu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Business Law at Ontario Technology University’s Faculty of Business and Information Technology. He holds a PhD from Delft Technical University (2014), a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of East London. Additionally, he is founder of Akalu Law Professional Corporation, specializing in privacy law, data governance, and cybersecurity. His academic research bridges legal and technological domains, focusing on regulatory frameworks for emerging technologies.
Professional memberships include the Ontario Bar Association (Privacy and Access Section Executive) and past affiliations with institutions such as Denmark Technical University’s Center for Information Communication Technologies and the University of Toronto’s Centre for Innovation Law and Policy. He is admitted to practice law in New York (2002) and Ontario (2019).
Research interests emphasize legal aspects of data governance, cybersecurity compliance, and ethical use of technology. His work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, addressing challenges in business operations resilience, supply chain risk management, and regulatory policy. He has contributed to policy frameworks for wireless technology regulation and advised organizations on privacy law compliance.
Outside academia, Akalu has practiced law with firms in New York and Toronto, served at the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner’s office, and worked with Ireland’s ComReg. His extracurricular pursuits include stand-up comedy, boxing, and triathlon competitions. He resides in Ajax with his family.
