Dr. Michael Veale is an Associate Professor and Vice-Dean (Education Innovation) in the Faculty of Laws at University College London (UCL). His work bridges computer science and information law, focusing on fundamental rights in the context of machine learning, AI, and encrypted computation. He holds a PhD from UCL’s STEaPP and Computer Science departments, alongside degrees from Maastricht University and LSE.
Veale serves as an IViR Fellow at the University of Amsterdam’s Institute for Information Law, and advises organizations like the Open Rights Group, Foxglove, and the UK Information Commissioner’s Office. His research on technology policy has influenced governments and regulators globally, cited over 5,000 times academically and by 250+ non-academic bodies.
Research interests include algorithmic accountability, privacy-preserving technologies, and ethical AI.
