Raivo Uibo is Professor of Immunology and Head of the Department of Immunology at the University of Tartu's Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine, Faculty of Medicine. He has held this position since 2016 and has been continuously affiliated with the University of Tartu since 1973, progressing from laboratory assistant to his current leadership role. He also served as Visiting Professor at University College London's Institute of Immunity and Transplantation in 2018.
Uibo earned his medical degree from the University of Tartu (1967-1973). He received his first Doctor's Degree from the University of Tartu Faculty of Medicine in 1978 with research on 'Immediate and delayed hypersensitivity in chronic gastritis' under Vello Salupere. His second Doctor's Degree came from the University of Tampere in 1990 with research on 'Specificity and functional significance of gastric and hepatic autoantibodies.'
Professor Uibo's research focuses on autoimmune disorders, with particular expertise in the molecular and cellular aspects of autoimmune diseases. His work extensively examines immune mechanisms in diabetes and coeliac disease, clinical immunology applications, and the immunology of the human reproductive system. His laboratory investigates the role of dendritic cells, T regulatory cells, and autoantibodies in these conditions, with significant contributions to understanding immune dysregulation in autoimmune pathologies.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent research trajectory centered on autoimmune disorders, particularly diabetes and coeliac disease. His work spans fundamental immunological mechanisms, clinical applications, and epidemiological studies across multiple countries. A notable trend is his focus on diagnostic markers and standardization in immunological testing, reflecting his commitment to translating basic research into clinical practice.

Throughout his career, Uibo has secured numerous research grants including NIH Fogarty grants, EU INCO-Copernicus projects, and Karolinska Institute KIRT grants. He has served as Principal Investigator for multiple projects including the Competence Centre on Reproductive Medicine and Biology. His editorial work includes serving as Associate Editor for BMC Immunology since 2014 and on editorial boards for several other immunology journals. He has mentored numerous students and researchers through his academic positions at the University of Tartu.
Professor Uibo leads the Department of Immunology at the University of Tartu, which operates within the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine. His research team collaborates extensively with international partners including institutions in Finland, Sweden, and the UK. He has been instrumental in establishing Estonia's immunology research capacity, founding the Estonian Society of Immunology in 1984 and serving as its chairman until 1995.
