معرفی
Kai Kisand is a Professor of Cellular Immunology at the University of Tartu, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine since 2021. Previously, he served as Research Professor of Cellular Immunology (2019-2020), and held various Senior Research Fellow positions in Immunology at the same institution since 2004. His career demonstrates a consistent focus on immunological research within the University of Tartu's medical faculty.
Dr. Kisand received his medical degree from the University of Tartu Medical Faculty in 1989 and completed his Doctor's Degree in 1999 with a dissertation on "Autoantibodies to 2-oxoacid dehydrogenase complexes" under the supervision of Raivo Uibo.
Kai Kisand's research focuses on several key areas within immunology. His primary interests include the molecular mechanisms of primary immunodeficiencies, the role of type I interferons in mono- and polygenic autoimmunity, characteristics of innate and adaptive immune responses to SARS-CoV2, and age-related changes in the immune system. His work bridges basic immunological mechanisms with clinical applications, particularly in understanding autoimmune disorders and immune responses to viral infections. He has published extensively on interferon pathways and their relationship to autoimmune conditions like APECED (Autoimmune Polyendocrinopathy-Candidiasis-Ectodermal Dystrophy syndrome).
Analysis of Dr. Kisand's recent publications (2024-2025) reveals a strong emphasis on interferon pathways in autoimmune conditions, particularly Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, and in responses to viral infections including SARS-CoV2. His research increasingly incorporates multi-omics approaches to understand inborn errors of immunity, with particular attention to AIRE-dependent pathways and their relationship to autoimmune conditions. His work spans from basic molecular mechanisms to clinical applications and population studies.
Dr. Kisand has received significant recognition for his research contributions:
- 2022 Estonian Natural Science Award in medicine for research cycle "Immuunsüsteemi vananemise ja Covid-19 haiguse uuringud" (Immune system aging and Covid-19 disease research) with Pärt Peterson
- 2012 Estonian National Science Award in medicine for research cycle "Kandidoosi uued tekkemehhanismid" (New mechanisms of candidiasis)
Professor Kisand has been actively involved in research administration and leadership. He has served as President of the Estonian Society of Immunology and Allergology (2001-2004 and 2015-2018), is a member of the Henry Kunkel Society since 2019, and serves on the council of the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine. He has organized numerous international immunology courses and conferences, including the International Immunology Summer School "ABC7: Autoimmunity, B cells and Complement" (2023-present). His research has attracted significant funding from Estonian research agencies, though specific grant details are not provided in the available information.
Dr. Kisand maintains active involvement in the international immunology community through memberships in the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (since 2018) and participation in collaborative research networks. His laboratory appears to focus on cellular immunology approaches to understand immune regulation, autoimmunity, and responses to infections, with particular expertise in interferon pathways and primary immunodeficiencies. His work on SARS-CoV2 immune responses has contributed significantly to understanding why certain patient populations experience severe disease outcomes.
