Raissa Ferron

Raissa Ferron is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), holding the Austin Industries Endowed Faculty Fellowship. Her research focuses on infrastructure materials, particularly the rheology and microstructural characterization of cement-based composites. She joined UT Austin in 2009 and has led projects on smart concrete, sustainable materials, and bio-inspired construction techniques.

Dr. Ferron earned her B.S. from Howard University (2002), M.S. (2004), and Ph.D. (2008) in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University. Her technical expertise spans cement chemistry, self-consolidating concrete, and affordable sustainable housing materials.

Her research includes developing set-on-demand concrete, studying microbial-induced calcification for self-healing, and advancing additive manufacturing in construction. She leads funded projects from the National Academies, NSF, and Texas Department of Transportation, addressing challenges in wellbore integrity, concrete durability, and sustainable materials.

Dr. Ferron is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and has received awards including the 2010 ASCE New Faces Award and 2016 ENR Top 40 Under 40. She serves on ACI committees and ASTM International. Her teaching includes courses on materials science, sustainable infrastructure, and advanced concrete processing.

In outreach, she promotes diversity in engineering through leadership roles in UT’s Underrepresented Minority Students Action Committee and advising the Black Women in Science and Engineering (BWise) group. She engages in K-12 outreach, including Explore UT and Discover Engineering programs.
