Prof. Raingard Esser is a Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts. She specializes in migration, borders, and religious history, with a focus on the Low Countries and Holy Roman Empire. Her research explores crisis management in pre-modern societies, material culture, and transregional networks. She holds leadership roles including Director of the Graduate School for the Humanities and serves on the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Johannes a Lasco Library and Herzog August Bibliothek.
Education: PhD in History (1994, Cologne), studies in History and German Literature. Taught at Cologne, Giessen, Potsdam, LSE, and UWE Bristol before joining Groningen in 2011.
Research Interests: Early modern border societies, migration, crisis resilience, confessional dynamics, and material culture. Current projects include studies on crisis management in the Eighty Years' War and the role of monasteries in religious reform.
Recent Publications: Includes books on early modern borders (2025) and articles on migration, materiality of sacred spaces, and post-war geopolitics. Awards include the 2018 Teaching Innovation Fellowship.
Awards: Multiple research fellowships, including HAB Wolfenbüttel (2015) and NUI Galway (2012).
