Dr. Hans Peterse is a Lecturer in Early Modern Dutch History at the Center for Dutch Studies (Zentrum für Niederlande-Studien) at the University of Münster since 2005. His research focuses on the history of the Netherlands in the Early Modern Period, the Reformation, Catholic reform movements, confessionalization in Germany and the Netherlands, and Christian-Jewish relations in medieval and early modern contexts.
Education: Born in Eibergen (Gelderland, Netherlands) in 1959, he attended Jacobus College in Enschede. He studied History at Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen, with additional studies in Philosophy, Art History, and Islamic Studies. He earned his PhD in 1991 at Leiden University with a dissertation on 16th-century Christian anti-Judaism.
Teaching: In the 2025/26 and 2024/25 winter semesters, he taught the seminar 'History and Institutions of the EU'.
Research Contributions: He has participated in exhibitions including Calmeyer-joden. Redding van mensen en schuld tijdens de Bezetting (1941-1945) and De stad en de mensen. Haarlem en Osnabrück in het jaar 1961. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Institut für Europäische Geschichte in Mainz (1987) and Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel (1991/1992).
