Dr. Janis Gibbs is an Associate Professor of History at Hope College, where she has been a faculty member since 1996. She serves as co-advisor of the Fulbright Program for students, a pre-law advisor, and a faculty member in the Hope College Vienna Summer School since 1999. Additionally, she is a member of the Global Studies Advisory Council.
- Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in History from the University of Virginia (1996, 1991), J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School (1984), B.A. with highest honors from the College of William and Mary (1981)
Her research focuses on sixteenth-century Germany, particularly the interplay of religion, politics, and identity in Cologne. She has explored unique historical cases like Hermann von Weid, a deposed Archbishop with dual Catholic and Protestant funerals, and broader themes such as confessional conflicts, jurisdictional challenges, and civil liberties in wartime. Her teaching spans Reformation Europe, the modern Middle East, genocide studies, the Middle Ages, and a first-year seminar on civil liberties.
Recent publications and presentations highlight her work on early modern German history, including topics like experiential learning, jurisdictional complexity, and rituals of mourning in Cologne. She has received prestigious fellowships, including the Herzog August Bibliothek Fellowship (2011) and Fulbright-Hays Fellowship (1991), and has served leadership roles in academic societies.
