Prof. Dr. Rainer Schützeichel is a Professor of Architectural and Urban History at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam since 2022. He previously held roles as Co-Program Director at ETH Zurich’s Chair of Structural Heritage and Monument Preservation, a Research Associate at ETH Zurich’s Chair of Architectural Theory, and a Lecturer at various institutions. His expertise spans architectural history, urban planning theory, and historical preservation. He earned his doctorate at ETH Zurich in 2016, receiving the Theodor Fischer Prize for his dissertation. Schützeichel’s work focuses on figures like Herman Sörgel, Theodor Fischer, and Heinz Isler, exploring their contributions to architectural science and urban design. He has authored monographs, edited volumes, and numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. His research also examines the interplay between historical architectural theories and modern practices, with a particular interest in spatial perception and functionalism.
Education: Studied architecture at Cologne University of Applied Sciences and Vienna University of Technology; completed MAS in History and Theory of Architecture at ETH Zurich. He has held editorial roles at tec 21, archimaera, and Der Architekt.
Research interests include the history of architectural pedagogy, the role of historical rediscovery in modernization, and the preservation of structural heritage. Notable projects include studies on Emilie Winkelmann, a pioneering female architect, and exhibitions on Oskar Pixis and Heinz Isler’s shell construction. His awards include the 2017 Theodor Fischer Prize.
Lectures and exhibitions highlight his engagement with urban planning history and architectural preservation, often addressing transdisciplinary themes like empathy in design and provisional architecture. He collaborates internationally, contributing to symposia in Switzerland, Mexico, and Germany.
