Rainer M.W. Amon is a Professor at the Department of Marine and Coastal Environmental Science, Texas A&M University at Galveston. His research focuses on environmental biogeochemistry, particularly dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Arctic and Gulf of Mexico systems, and its role in climate change. He holds a Ph.D. in Limnology/Ecology (University of Vienna, 1996) and a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences (University of Texas at Austin, 1995). He has been affiliated with institutions like the Alfred Wegener Institute and collaborates internationally on Arctic and Siberian watershed studies.
Key research areas include DOM sources and transformations in Arctic rivers, Gulf of Mexico carbon cycling, and Yenisei River carbon fluxes. His work integrates field expeditions, glider-based observations, and analytical chemistry. Awards include the Theodor-Körner-Preis (1990) and multiple fellowships. He advises Ph.D. students and has led grants totaling over $1.9 million from NSF, Russian Science Foundation, and others. His lab explores interdisciplinary approaches to address climate change impacts on marine systems.
Teaching includes courses in Chemical Oceanography and Biological Oceanography. He is also part of the Texas Center for Climate Studies and holds joint appointments in Oceanography and Marine Biology.
