Shari Yvon-Lewis is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Oceanography at Texas A&M University. She holds a Ph.D. in Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry from the University of Miami (1994) and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts (1989). Her research focuses on trace gas biogeochemistry, particularly the role of the ocean in regulating atmospherically important gases like halocarbons, nitrous oxide, and greenhouse gases.
Her career includes roles as NOAA/AOML Research Chemist (1997–2004) and postdoctoral fellowships at NOAA/CMDL. She has led extensive fieldwork in the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic, Pacific, and Antarctic regions, often involving graduate students like Fenix Garcia Tigreros, Lei Hu, and Yina Liu. Recent projects examine gas exchange dynamics in rivers (e.g., Yenisei River), coastal acidification, and PFAS distribution in Galveston Bay.
Publications highlight advancements in methyl bromide budgets, methane flux dynamics post-Deepwater Horizon, and brominated substance distributions. Her work bridges laboratory studies, field measurements, and modeling to address global environmental challenges.
Advising emphasizes student participation in expeditions, with notable contributions to understanding hydrocarbon seeps and climate impacts on marine ecosystems. Fieldwork includes leadership roles in cruises like HalocAST-A/P and HYFLUX.
