Professor Rainer M.W. Amon serves in the Department of Marine and Coastal Environmental Science within the College of Marine Sciences & Maritime Studies at Texas A&M University at Galveston. His joint appointments include the Department of Oceanography and Graduate Faculty in Marine Biology, with affiliation to the Texas Center for Climate Studies.
His educational background includes dual PhDs in Limnology/Ecology (University of Vienna, 1996) and Marine Sciences (University of Texas at Austin, 1995), plus MS and BS degrees in Zoology/Marine Biology from the University of Vienna (1990, 1986).
Dr. Amon's research centers on Arctic biogeochemistry, dissolved organic matter dynamics, and climate change impacts on high-latitude systems. His work spans the Arctic Ocean, Siberian rivers (particularly Yenisei), Gulf of Mexico, and urban Houston watersheds. Key methodologies include tracing terrigenous organic matter, CDOM analysis, and gas flux measurements. Recent publications reveal strong emphasis on carbon cycling, with recurring themes of Arctic freshwater export and microbial processing.
His scientific contributions are recognized through multiple Fulbright Fellowships, Theodor-Körner-Preis, and E.J. Lund/J.C. Barton Fellowships. Major funding sources include NSF Chemical Oceanography ($256,841), NSF Arctic Natural Sciences ($399,600), Russian Science Foundation ($43,000), and SENER/Conacyt ($985,000), supporting fieldwork from the Arctic to Gulf of Mexico.
Dr. Amon teaches core courses including MARS 440 (Chemical Oceanography), OCNG 420 (Biological Oceanography), and MARS 481 (Marine Sciences Seminar), emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches and public science communication. His lab provides extensive field experience, with students participating in Arctic expeditions and Gulf of Mexico research.
