Prof. Dr. Rainer G. Ulrich serves as Laboratory Head at the Institute of Novel and Emerging Infectious Diseases (INNT) within the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) and holds the position of apl. Professor at the University of Greifswald. His expertise lies in the field of zoonotic and emerging viral diseases.
His research program emphasizes the characterization of emerging and zoonotic viruses in wildlife, particularly rodents and birds. Key areas include hantavirus ecology, viral spillover mechanisms, and the development of surveillance systems for early pathogen detection to mitigate outbreak risks.
Prof. Ulrich is actively involved in multiple research initiatives, including the BEPREP project (aimed at identifying best practices for biodiversity recovery and pandemic prevention) and the WBA-Zoo and CoRoPa project (focused on pathogen detection and outbreak management). He also contributes to the National Research Platform for Zoonoses and supervises graduate theses.
He leads a dedicated research team at the INNT, collaborating with scientists such as Dr. M. Eiden, Dr. C. Fast, and others, and serves as the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) head for Hantaviruses in Germany.
