Prof. Dr. Martin H. Groschup serves as Head of the Institute of Novel and Emerging Infectious Diseases (INNT) at Germany's Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) on the island of Riems in Greifswald. A certified Veterinarian Specialist in Microbiology and Virology, he directs National Reference Laboratories for critical pathogens including West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.
His research centers on emerging zoonotic threats through a One Health lens, with emphasis on arbovirus ecology (mosquito-borne diseases), viral hemorrhagic fevers (RVF, CCHF), and transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Fieldwork spans vector competence studies in Germany, wildlife-livestock-human interfaces in Africa, and biosecurity frameworks for high-containment pathogens.
Prof. Groschup leads major international initiatives including:
- VetBioNet: Global network for animal infectiology research
- DURABLE & MOBILISE: Epidemic response laboratory alliances
- AA Ukraine IV & AA Sub Sahara IV: Veterinary lab capacity building in conflict zones
- Bunyavires & ACEZAD: Pathogen transmission studies in Zambia, Mozambique, and Europe
He supervises graduate theses in virology and zoonotic disease ecology while contributing to national platforms like the German Research Platform for Zoonoses.
