Rainer Frietsch is Head of the Department of Innovation and Knowledge Economy at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI in Karlsruhe, Germany. He holds a Visiting Professorship at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Science and Development (CASISD) since 2008 and is a visiting researcher at the Beijing Research Center for Science of Science (BRCSS). His work focuses on innovation policy, bibliometrics, patent analysis, and research indicators. Key roles include Deputy Head of the Competence Center Policy–Industry–Innovation (2008–2019) and Coordinator of the Business Unit Innovation Indicators.
Education: Ph.D. in Economics from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT); studies in social science at University of Mannheim. Professional career includes 23+ years at Fraunhofer ISI, with notable projects such as the Spin-Offs from public research organisations in Germany report (2020) and analyses of China's R&I system development. Active in international collaborations, including RISIS 2 (European research infrastructure for STI policy studies) and Data4Impact (health-related innovation assessment).
Research interests emphasize empirical methods in science policy, including patent statistics, technology foresight, and the societal impact of research. He coordinates large-scale indicator projects for policy advice, such as the PFI Monitoring Reports and EU R&I policy evaluations. Current work explores interdisciplinary collaboration structures, emerging markets' innovation potential, and the role of trademarks in SME strategies.
