Rainer Forst is a Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Institute of Political Science. He holds dual roles in the Department of Political Science and Department of Philosophy. His academic career includes visiting professorships at institutions like Harvard University, New York University, and the University of Michigan. Forst has been a key figure in the Cluster of Excellence 'Normative Orders' and co-director of 'Justitia Amplificata.'
He earned his Ph.D. (1993) and habilitation (2003) in Frankfurt, studying under Jürgen Habermas. Notable awards include the Leibniz Prize (2012). His research focuses on critical theory, justice, toleration, and the right to justification, with major works like Contexts of Justice and The Noumenal Republic.
Forst’s recent publications (2021–2024) explore Kantian constructivism, normativity, and power dynamics. He actively contributes to journals like Constellations and Political Theory, and leads editorial roles in multiple book series. His theoretical contributions are internationally debated in symposia and authored dialogues.
He directs the International MA Program in Political Theory and is a member of prestigious academies, including the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences.
