Rahul Roychoudhuri is a Professor of Cancer Immunology at the University of Cambridge, Department of Pathology, and serves as Director (non-clinical) of the CRUK Cambridge Centre Training Programme. He is also a Fellow and Director of Studies in Pathology at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. His research focuses on understanding immune regulation in inflammation and cancer, particularly the biology of CD4+ T cells (including regulatory T cells) and cytotoxic CD8+ T cells.
Roychoudhuri's research interests center on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of immune regulation and cancer immunosuppression. His laboratory investigates how immunoregulatory mechanisms function as 'brakes' on immune activation with important consequences in infection, inflammation, and cancer. His work has made fundamental contributions to understanding Treg cell differentiation and function, particularly the role of the transcription factor BACH2 in immune regulation. His group employs directed tumor evolution and high-throughput CRISPR-based functional genetics to identify novel immunoregulatory mechanisms operating within the tumor microenvironment.
Roychoudhuri has received prestigious awards including a Sir Henry Dale Fellowship (2015) and a Lister Institute Research Prize (2017). His laboratory has made several groundbreaking discoveries, including the role of BACH2 in Treg lineage specification, the impact of oxygen concentrations on Treg differentiation in peripheral tissues, and the restriction of CD8+ T cell activation by high potassium levels in the tumor microenvironment.
He advises numerous doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and serves on editorial boards for scientific journals including Immunology and the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. His laboratory maintains strong collaborations with researchers at the Babraham Institute, CRUK Cambridge Institute, and international institutions.
