Raha Moraffah is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), holding a tenure-track position since March 2024. Her research focuses on developing trustworthy and responsible machine learning algorithms with emphasis on causal inference integration and generative AI systems.
Her educational background:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science from Arizona State University
- B.S. in Computer Engineering from Sharif University of Technology
Dr. Moraffah's work bridges causal inference and machine learning to create robust AI systems. She pioneers methods for trustworthy generative AI and causal machine learning, with publications spanning data mining, natural language processing, and algorithmic responsibility. Her research has appeared in top venues including KDD, ICDM, WSDM, AAAI, and EMNLP.
Her recent 2024 publications demonstrate strong focus on trustworthy AI applications across PAKDD, EACL, and AAAI ReLM conferences, with particular emphasis on causal reasoning in generative models and cybersecurity applications.
She has received significant recognition:
- Outstanding Paper Award at IJCNLP 2023
- ASU Engineering Dean's Dissertation Award (2024)
- ASU’s CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award nominee (2024)
- SCAI Doctoral Fellowship for Excellent Research
Dr. Moraffah actively mentors students and contributes to academic service as a NeurIPS 2024 reviewer. She has delivered invited talks at UAI 2024's Causal Inference Workshop and the 2024 SIAM Annual Meeting, while editing a special issue on Generative AI for Cybersecurity.
She leads a research group at WPI focused on advancing causal and trustworthy AI systems, currently seeking motivated graduate students and interns for cutting-edge work in responsible machine learning.
