Raffaele Ciriello

Dr. Raffaele Ciriello is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Charles Perkins Centre. His research focuses on compassionate digital innovation, human-AI companionship, Web3 governance, and ethical technology use. He holds a PhD and M.Sc. from the University of Zurich and a B.Sc. from the University of Stuttgart, with prior roles as an Assistant Professor at the IT University of Copenhagen.

His work bridges interdisciplinary inquiry into sociotechnical systems, emphasizing responsible design and governance of emerging technologies like AI companions and blockchain. He has advised over 6 PhD, 23 Master’s, and 16 Bachelor’s students globally. Awards include Distinguished Member of the Association for Information Systems (2021) and multiple Outstanding Associate Editor accolades for ECIS and ICIS conferences.

Current projects include exploring AI companion user perceptions, designing mobile solutions for displaced youth (EduCare), and investigating Web3 governance. He collaborates with firms, startups, and NGOs, and serves as an Associate Editor for leading IS conferences. His teaching spans digital work environments and information systems management.
